Humanitarian and former Miss Canada Nazanin Afshin Jam has caused
quite a stir within the international music community with the release
of her debut music album, Someday. The second video from
the album, for the title track "Someday," has bolstered
an already impressive momentum that was initiated by the music video
release for the album's preview track, "I Dance for You."
Nazanin is best known throughout the international community for
her work in support of Nazanin Fatehi, a young Iranian woman who
was wrongfully imprisoned and sentenced to death. Because of Nazanin
Afshin Jam's efforts, Nazanin Fatehi was released from jail and
exonerated of charges brought against her.
As an artist, Nazanin continues to have success on the radio, as
her debut single, "Someday," recently climbed up the charts
for the forth week in a row. The song launched seven spots from
#29 to #22 on the FMQB adult contemporary charts, beating out such
heavyweights as Paul McCartney, Avril Lavigne, and Kelly Clarkson.
The song's video is also getting quite a response on YouTube as
well as major television outlets.
1) Model, Miss Canada, humanitarian, and now, recording
artist. What led you to this next step?
After
obtaining university degrees in Political Science and International
relations, I have always searched for ways to reach the public and
raise awareness on global issues. I got this start by working with
the Red Cross as a Global Youth Educator, traveling to high schools
and speaking on issues such as the landmine crisis and children
affected by war. While I felt that I was making an impact, I felt
that I needed to reach more people in a shorter amount of time.
I said "there are people suffering, there are many injustices,
I must act fast". My Miss Canada title and 1st runner up position
at Miss World gave me the platform I was looking for to have my
voice heard internationally. Having grown up surrounded by music
from all corners of the world, music seemed like the next natural
step. I find so much beauty and power in music and I believed that
this could be a strong medium in order to reach the hearts of the
masses. Music is my vehicle to promote social change and justice.
Music transcends all borders and lingers in one's soul. I hope my
music will cross many lands and touch many people.
2) Who did you work with on this album (producers, songwriters,
representatives)?
I was blessed to be surrounded by such talented people. My incredibly
talented manager Peter Karroll was the first one to give me the
strength to launch my recording career. We wrote most of the songs
together and other great music contributors were Todd Kerns and
Daniel Misera . I also owe great appreciation to Jason Darr of "Neurosonic"
and John Webster who are master sound engineers and helped make
the album the best it could be.
3) Would you describe your music as political? And what
genre?
I would describe my music as an extension of my life and experiences.
There are some songs that touch on politics, freedom for all people,
other songs touch upon faith and God and others are simply songs
about the grace and tribulations that come from love. The genre
is Pop and World fusion. Some songs are soft ballads, while others
are more upbeat dance songs.
4) You chose to do an outstanding cover of "Goleh Sangam"
for your album. Why this song?
I wanted to sing a traditional Persian song in order to pay homage
to my dear culture. I chose Goleh Sang because I connected with
the nostalgic mood to the song. While it is a song about the love
of two people, I sing it with Iran in mind as my beloved, my "lost
lover" that I may never see again. In the prelude to this song
I sing: "Iran, I have left you but I have not forgotten you,
you are the tear in my eye, you are missed, you are my flower of
stone". It doesn't translate very well in English but the Persian
version is: "Iran, tarket kardam vali faramoushet nakardam,
ashkeh cheshmeh mani, deleh tangeh mani, goleh sangeh mani".

5) What do you hope to achieve with this album? What do
you hope your fans can take away from it?
I hope that those that listen to my songs are able to connect, feel
empowered or find solace in the difficult times in their lives.
I wish for them to feel a sense of hope and see a positive path
for the future.
